Who Will Enter Jannah Without Hisab (Accountability)?

by zOrca

In the vast mercy of Allah ﷻ, there are servants of His who will be granted a unique and unimaginable honor: to enter Jannah (Paradise) without any reckoning (ḥisāb) or punishment (ʿadhāb). This divine favor was described in a famous hadith narrated by the noble companion ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه):

“Seventy thousand of my ummah will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. They are those who do not seek ruqyah, nor do they practice cauterization, nor do they believe in omens, and they place their trust in their Lord.”
Sahih al-Bukhari (5705), Sahih Muslim (220)

This hadith opens a profound window into the virtues of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah), spiritual integrity, and pure monotheism (tawḥīd). In this post, we will reflect on its meaning, the characteristics of these blessed individuals, and how we can align ourselves with their qualities.

What Does It Mean to Enter Paradise Without Reckoning?

To be spared from ḥisāb (reckoning) and ʿadhāb (punishment) is among the greatest honors a Muslim can attain. It implies that:

  • Allah ﷻ will forgive all sins out of His mercy,
  • The believer will not have to face the terrifying accountability on the Day of Judgment,
  • And such a person will be admitted directly into Jannah.

This honor is reserved for those of the highest degree of trust in Allah ﷻ and pure spiritual devotion.

Who Are the Seventy Thousand?

The Prophet ﷺ described them with specific traits:

1. They Do Not Ask for Ruqyah (رُقْيَة)

Ruqyah, the Islamic practice of reciting Qur’ān or duʿāʾs for healing, is permissible and often recommended. However, those who refrain from asking others to perform ruqyah for them are praised here for their elevated level of reliance on Allah ﷻ alone.

Note: This does not mean performing ruqyah is wrong, but that this group strives not to depend on others—even in spiritual matters—showing a higher level of independence and surrender to Allah ﷻ.

2. They Do Not Cauterize

Cauterization was a common medical treatment during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Although he acknowledged its usefulness, he disliked it for himself. It is reported that he said:

“Healing is in three things: a drink of honey, the incision of a cupper, and cauterization with fire, but I forbid my nation from cauterization.”
Sahih al-Bukhari (5680)

Again, the avoidance of cauterization reflects their complete reliance on Allah’s mercy and healing.

3. They Do Not Believe in Omens

They avoid superstitious beliefs or practices such as seeing certain animals or dates as signs of good or bad luck. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly rejected such practices and said:

“There is no contagion (without Allah’s permission), nor is there any bad omen (ṭiyarah).”
Sahih al-Bukhari (5707), Sahih Muslim (2224)

These individuals place their full trust in Allah ﷻ without attributing events to coincidence or superstition.

4. They Place Their Complete Trust in Allah ﷻ

This is the core trait: Tawakkul. They believe that nothing benefits or harms them except by Allah’s will. As Allah ﷻ says:

﴿ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴾
“And in Allah let the believers put their trust.”
— Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:122)

The companions were so moved by this hadith that they immediately asked:

“O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me among them!”
To which the Prophet ﷺ replied to some:
“You are among them.”

May Allah ﷻ make us among them as well — those who are granted Paradise without reckoning, who live and die upon Tawḥīd, sincerity, and unwavering trust in Him.

Expanding the Numbers: More Than 70,000?

According to an additional narration:

“With every thousand of them will be seventy thousand more, and three handfuls from the handfuls of my Lord.”
Musnad Ahmad (21037), graded authentic by Al-Albani in As-Silsilah as-Saḥīḥah

This hadith shows the vastness of Allah’s mercy. From a finite number of 70,000, the gates of Jannah are opened to countless more through Allah’s divine generosity.

The Deeper Message of This Hadith

This hadith is not only a description of a select group—it is a blueprint for spiritual growth:

  • It encourages us to grow in independence from worldly means and dependence on Allah ﷻ.
  • It teaches us to remove superstition, rely on divine decree, and seek spiritual strength through worship.
  • It reminds us that the path to Paradise is paved with sincerity, patience, and unwavering trust.
