Hadith | What’s the One Thing I Should Stick To?

by zOrca

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As believers traversing the path of spirituality, we often seek ways to keep our hearts connected to Allah s.w.t., the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. Among the many blessings bestowed upon us is the sublime act of Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah. A seemingly simple act, yet with profundity so vast that it quenches the thirst of souls, enlivens the heart, and importantly, keeps the tongue moist from the remembrance of Allah.

The Remembrance: A Constant Companionship

`Abdullah bin Busr (ra) narrated that: A man said: “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), indeed, the legislated acts of Islam have become too much for me, so inform me of a thing that I should stick to.” He (ﷺ) said: “Let not your tongue cease to be moist with the remembrance of Allah.”

In our devout journey toward inner peace and fulfillment in our faith, it is only human to sometimes feel overwhelmed by the multitude of obligations that Islam invites us to fulfill. There is profound comfort to be found in the guidance provided by the blessed teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

A heartfelt incident, narrated by `Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him), shines a gentle light upon this very aspect of our Islamic practice. A man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), burdened with concern, and confided, “O Messenger of Allah, indeed, the legislated acts of Islam have become too much for me, so inform me of a thing that I should stick to.” To this, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied with tender grace, “Let not your tongue cease to be moist with the remembrance of Allah.”

This poignant Hadith, cherished and held dearly in our hearts, illuminates a path of simplicity and ease—a guiding beacon for when our spirits seek an anchor. The beautiful, effortless nature of Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah s.w.t., is the golden thread through which we can weave a constant connection with our Creator, even amidst the hustle of our daily lives.

Oh, the beautiful journey of a heart that finds solace in a tongue moist from Dhikr! Engaging in Dhikr is an effortless act with boundless rewards. It requires no specific time, place, or posture, yet yields tranquility, purification, and an exquisite closeness to Allah, which is the ultimate goal of every believer’s existence.

The Virtue of Dhikr: A Fountain of Spiritual Sustenance

Dhikr, the beautiful act of remembering Allah, is like a fountain that constantly replenishes the believer’s spiritual thirst. The beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “The comparison of the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not remember Allah is like that of the living and the dead” (Bukhari). This compelling analogy paints a vivid picture of Dhikr’s vital role in the life of a believer. Just as water is to life, the moist tongue busied with the praise of Allah is the life-source for our fluttering hearts, yearning for divine comfort.

Dhikr | A Fortress Against Negativity

Just as water can cleanse dirt, Dhikr cleanses the heart, removing the rust that accumulates over time due to negligence and sins. A moist tongue from remembering Allah is a shield, a strong fortress protecting you from intrusion of negative thoughts, despair, and anxiety. It is a purifying stream, nullifying the effects of worldly distractions and filling your heart with peace.

With every rhythmic repetition of “SubhanAllah,” “Alhamdulillah,” “Allahu Akbar,” or “La ilaha illallah,” we keep our tongues moist in His remembrance, and our hearts find the peace they yearn for. As we navigate the complexities and hardships of life, let us keep our tongues moist from the remembrance of Allah; for in remembering Him, we are reminded of our purpose, our aspirations, and our assured refuge. May we find our hearts comforted, our souls nourished, and our faith fortified through the blessed act of Dhikr.
