“أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله”
“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu”
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone, without any partners. And (I bear witness that) Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.”

The Arkan of Wudu, or the pillars of ablution, are the necessary parts of Wudu without which it will not be considered valid. These pillars act as conductors of grace, channeling spiritual purity, and harmony onto our everyday lives. Here are the Arkan of Wudu as delineated in our beloved Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) words and practices:
- Intention (Niyyah): Unvoiced yet firmly held in the heart, the intention is the initiation of the Wudu ritual. It is the profound internal affirmation that you are performing this act of purification to please Allah s.w.t and to prepare for Salah.
- Washing the Face: The face, being the mirror of the soul, is purified first, three times, from the forehead to the chin and from ear to ear.
- Washing the Arms till the Elbows: Washing the arms indicates the purification of our actions, performed three times for both the right and left arm.
- Wiping the Head: A single, comprehensive wipe over the head embodies spiritual surrender and the erasure of worldly worries.
- Washing the Feet until the Ankles: The sanctification of the feet, three times each, signifies the readiness to tread upon the path of righteousness.

Benefits of Well Performed Wudu

- Removal of sins: Each drop of water that falls from a Muslim’s limbs during Wudu takes away a sin until he or she is completely purified from sin. As narrated by Abu Huraira, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “When a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in the course of Wudu), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water (Muslim 244).
- Gateway to Salah: The ablution is a pre-requisite for Salah (prayer), the second pillar of our beloved Islam. Performing Wudu allows us to stand before Allah s.w.t cleansed, both physically and spiritually, opening a gateway for us to have a serene communion with our Creator.
- Radiance on Day of Resurrection: As mentioned in a Hadith, those members of the believers’ body that are washed during Wudu would glow brightly on the Day of Resurrection (Bukhari and Muslim). By Allah’s mercy, adherents of Wudu would, hence, be distinguished by this radiant glow. According to a Hadith, those parts of the believers’ body that are washed during Wudu would shine brightly on the Day of Resurrection, and they would be known as “Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalun”. This serves as a reference to the glowing faces of Muslims who adhere to regular Wudu, an act that purifies them physically and spiritually. Consequently, the ablution, by its illuminating effects, adds to the believer’s beauty, leaving a radiant impression on their faces.
- Increase in Willpower and Self-discipline: The act of performing Wudu promotes self-discipline by teaching us to control our physical desires and strive for a higher level of spiritual purity.
