Dua For Wedding | 15 Supplications For A Blessed Marriage

by zOrca

Dua For Wedding | Marriage in Islam is not merely a contract or a social arrangement—it is a sacred bond, a sign of Allah’s ﷻ mercy and wisdom, and one of the most celebrated aspects of a Muslim’s life. Among the blessed Sunnahs associated with a marriage is the beautiful duʿāʾ that the Prophet ﷺ would say upon congratulating newlyweds.

This article explores the wedding duʿāʾ from the Sunnah, its authentic source, meaning, and the wisdom behind it, offering spiritual insight into how Islam frames marriage as an act of devotion, mercy, and unity.

The Authentic Wedding Dua from the Prophet ﷺ

When someone got married, the Prophet ﷺ used to say the following duʿāʾ to congratulate the couple:

بَارَكَ ٱللّٰهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

Transliteration:
Bārakallāhu laka, wa bāraka ʿalayka, wa jamaʿa baynakumā fī khayr.

Translation:
“May Allah bless you, and send blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.”

Source of the Dua For Wedding

This duʿāʾ is established in authentic hadith, reported by several companions.

  • Narrated by Abu Hurairah ﵁:
The Prophet ﷺ said this to congratulate someone who got married.

  • Sunan Abu Dawud (2130)
  • Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhī (1091)

Understanding the Duʿāʾ Phrase by Phrase

May Allah bless you”

This first part is a personal blessing—asking Allah ﷻ to place barakah (blessing) in the individual’s life, particularly in his or her role as a spouse.

And may He bless upon you”

This part implies that the blessings of Allah ﷻ will not only be within the individual but also surround and envelop them—affecting their home, marriage, and relationship.

And bring you together in goodness”

Marriage in Islam is not just about companionship—it’s about coming together upon khayr (goodness):

  • Good manners
  • Mutual respect
  • Love and mercy
  • Deen (religion) and righteousness
  • Raising righteous children
  • Building a life centered on Allah’s ﷻ obedience

This part of the duʿāʾ is a plea that the couple’s union not only be preserved but be preserved upon goodness, in both dunya and akhirah.

Why This Duʿāʾ Is Better Than “Mabrook”

It is common today to say “Mabrook” (congratulations) at weddings, and while it’s a kind gesture, it’s not from the Sunnah. The wedding duʿāʾ of the Prophet ﷺ is far more comprehensive and spiritually rich. It includes:

  • A supplication for barakah (divine blessing)
  • A prayer for divine protection
  • An emphasis on khayr (goodness) and Islamic values

The Prophet ﷺ never used the phrase “Mabrook” in this context. Saying the prophetic duʿāʾ connects your words with a Sunnah practice, making the moment not only joyful but spiritually meaningful.

Sunnah Etiquette When Attending a Wedding

In addition to making duʿāʾ, the Sunnah includes other etiquettes:

  1. Make sincere duʿāʾ for the couple—both publicly and in private.
  2. Attend the walīmah (wedding feast) if invited, unless excused.
    • Hadith: “If one of you is invited to a walīmah, let him go.”
      — Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (1429)
  3. Avoid extravagance or un-Islamic customs (e.g., mixed dancing, music).
  4. Offer helpful advice for beginning a life of taqwa and sabr.

Marriage Is a Blessing—A Duʿāʾ Is a Gift

Just as the union of two believers in marriage is a great niʿmah (favor) from Allah ﷻ, the duʿāʾ for the married couple is a sincere act of love from the community. You may not have gold or gifts to offer, but a heartfelt duʿāʾ based on the words of the Prophet ﷺ is worth more than any material offering.

It plants barakah. It connects hearts through Allah ﷻ. And it preserves the union with divine favor.

Alternate Duʿāʾ Reported from the Prophet ﷺ

While the above duʿāʾ is the most established, scholars also mention a slightly different variation:

بَارَكَ ٱللّٰهُ لَكُمَا، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكُمَا، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

“May Allah bless both of you, and send blessings upon both of you, and unite you both in goodness.”

This is a grammatically pluralized version and is linguistically correct if addressing both spouses together.

What If You’re the One Getting Married?

If you are the one getting married, remember to make your own duʿāʾ as well. Among them:

Transliteration:
Allāhumma ajʿal baynanā mawaddatan wa raḥmah, wa bārik lanā fī zawājinā, wajʿalhu sababān li-riḍāka wa dukhūli jannatik.

Translation:
“O Allah, place affection and mercy between us, bless our marriage, and make it a means to Your pleasure and entry into Your Paradise.”

This duʿāʾ does not come from the Qur’an or from any authentic hadith collection as a direct quote. Rather, it is a composed supplication (duʿāʾ mū’allaf) that combines thematic phrases found in the Qur’an (e.g., mawaddah wa raḥmah from Qur’an 30:21) and includes noble requests such as barakah, Allah’s ﷻ pleasure, and Paradise.

Revive the Sunnah, Give the Best Gift

In a world where weddings are often reduced to glamour and excess, let us revive the spiritual beauty that Islam teaches. By making the prophetic duʿāʾ:

بَارَكَ ٱللّٰهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

…you are giving the couple something far greater than a wrapped gift: you are giving them a legacy of barakah, and a prayer rooted in the light of the Prophet ﷺ.
