Dua For The Deceased | In the sacred journey of life, sometimes we are called upon to tread the path of loss. Dealing with the departure of a loved one is undeniably challenging. Yet, it is in these difficult moments that we are given the blessed opportunity to remember our Creator and to seek comfort and solace through His divine guidance.

In the following, we share  dua (supplications) to recite for the dearly departed. May Allah s.w.t. grant ease to their souls and deliver them into Merciful hands in the Hereafter.

Dua when knowing a person has deceased | Istirja (Arabic: ٱسْتِرْجَاع)

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Transliteration: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.”
Translation: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” [Qur’an 2:156]

Dua for forgiveness for the deceased

When standing over a grave, you can recite additional prayers for the well-being of the deceased in the hereafter, for Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and a peaceful journey into paradise. A recommended dua is:

اللهم اغفر لـ بقدر حاجته/ها، و اغفر لي و لوالدي و لجميع المسلمين و المسلمات. آمين

Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir li [name of the deceased ] bi-qadr haajatihi/ha, wa ighfir li wa li-walidayya wa li-jamee’il muslimin wa’l muslimat. Ameen.

Translation : O Allah, forgive [mention the name of deceased if known] to the extent that he/she is in need of it, and forgive me, my parents and all the Muslim men and women. Ameen.

This humble supplication is a poignant invocation, uniting us with our deceased loved ones under the tender mercy of Allah. It is not only a plea for forgiveness for the one who had departed, but a reminder for ourselves and the entire Ummah of our shared need for Allah’s mercy.

Dua For The Dead As They Enter The Afterlife

In our mutual journey towards understanding and spirituality, we venture to reflect upon these immense duas. Let them serve as an oasis of healing and fortitude, reminding us that we are under the ever-present gaze of Allah s.w.t. We will, Insha’Allah, break down these profound utterances, providing not only the transliteration but also the English translation. In this way, we can drive closer towards internalizing their profound meanings.

Transliteration: Allahuma in-na (fulān ibna fulān) fi dhamatika…
Translation: Surely, O Allah, (this person) son of (this person) is under Your protection…

Transliteration: wa habl jawārika, faqihhu min fitnatil qabr wa ‘adhab an-nār…
Translation: …and within Your area of sanctuary, so protect him from the trials of the grave and the punishment of the Fire…

Transliteration: wa anta ahl al-wafā’ wa al-haqq, allāhumma ghfir lahu warhamhu…
Translation: …You are the Source of fidelity and truth. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him…

At this juncture, dear brothers and sisters, let us pause and reflect upon the weight of these words. We are presenting a beloved human soul into Allah’s care, seeking His protection, mercy, and forgiveness. We are intimately engaging within the divine dialogue, partaking in a ritual as old as the Ummah itself, praying and pleading for those who have passed away from this worldly life.

Dua Seeking forgiveness and the company of Prophet Mohammed

Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir lahu  wa’urdihi hawd rasulika ṣallalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

Translation: O Allah, forgive him and allow him to approach the Pool of Your Messenger, Peace be upon him.

Dua For Forgivness And Raising Ranks In The Hereafter

Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu, warfa’ darajatah, wa’aẓim ajrah, wa’timm nuruha, wa’afsah lahu fi qabrih, w’alhiqhu bi-nabiyyih.

Translation: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, raise his rank, increase his reward, perfect his light, make his grave spacious, and make him join your Prophet.

Grief weighs heavily on our hearts, yet we find solace and compassion in these words of prayer. May they serve as a balm to soothe your distress. Remember, our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us that patience is at the first stroke of calamity.

Let us remain patient and trust in the divine wisdom of Allah s.w.t, for truly, with every hardship comes ease (Quran 94:6).

In our grief, we find a means of expressing our faith and seeking solace from our Creator. May our mutual consolation serve as a sturdy sail guiding us all towards the shore of peace in this stormy voyage called life. We learn from these challenges, as they afford us the opportunity to witness the constant presence and munificence of Allah s.w.t., even in the face of adversity.
