Dua For Pain Relief | Pain and hardship are a part of our earthly existence, yet they also serve as means to seek nearness to Allah, and an opportunity for purification and elevated ranks in the Hereafter. Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us duas – expressions for protection, healing, and comfort, to recite during times of pain:
Dua For Pain Relief | Dua for Physical Pain:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised us to place our hand at the site of the pain and say:
بِسْمِ اللهِ
Transliteration: “Bismillah”
Translation: “In the name of Allah.”
Then repeat the following dua seven times:
أَعُوذُ باللهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ
Transliteration: “A’udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru.”
Translation: “I seek refuge in Allah and in His Power from the evil that afflicts me and that which I apprehend.”

Dua for Pain Relief | Dua From Hadith:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to recite the following dua when inflicted with pain:
أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، وَاشْفِ، أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءٌ لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَماً
Transliteration: “Adhhibil-ba’sa, Rabban-naasi, ishfi, antash-Shaafii, laa shifaa-a illaa shifaa-uka shifaa-an laa yughaadiru saqaman.”
Translation: “O Lord of the people, remove this pain and cure it, You are the one who cures and there is no one besides You who can cure, grant such a cure that no illness remains.”1
Dua Istiatha from Disease
You can also recite this dua for good health and comfort from Hisnul Muslim:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الْأَسْقَامِ
Transliteration: “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-barasi, wal-jununi, wal-judhaami, wa min sayyi’il-asqaami.”
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leucoderma, insanity, leprosy, and evil diseases.”2
Mention of Shifaa in Al-Quran
Surah Ash-Shu’ara (26:80)
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
Transliteration: Wa idha maridtu fahuwa yashfeeni.
Translation: “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.”
Embedded in this potent ayah is an affirmation of absolute trust in Allah’s mercy, attesting to the divine truth that Allah alone is the Healer. It underscores the fact that whenever illness befalls us, it is Allah who grants recovery and restores health.
Surah Al-Isra (17:82)
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَا يَزِيدُ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًا
Transliteration: Wa nunazzilu mina al-Qur’ani ma huwa shifaun wa rahmatun lilmu’mineena wa la yazeedudhzhalimeena illa khasara.
Translation: “And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.”
Through this verse, Allah divulges that the powerful words of the Qur’an carry profound healing for the believers, as well as mercy. It presents a stark contrast between those who embrace the Qur’an, receiving solace and mercy, and those who reject its wisdom, leading to their loss.
Surah At-Tawbah (9:14)
يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Transliteration:Yu’adhdhibuhumu Allah bi-Aydikum wayukhzihim wayansurukum ‘alayhim wayashfi Sudura qawmin mu’minin
Translation: God will punish them at your hands, and will disgrace them, and will help you against them, and will heal the hearts of those who believe.
In this verse, Allah s.w.t. delivers a clear message of His divine justice. The punishment of wrongdoers serves as a means to purify the wrongdoers and to relieve the hearts of the believers. Such an assurance can offer immense solace to those who have been wronged, reminding them that Allah’s Justice prevails.
Surah Fussilat (41:44)
وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا أَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ ءَايَاتُهُ أَأَعْجَمِيٌّ وَعَرَبِيٌّ قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ فِي ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُولَئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
Transliteration: Wa-law jaalnahu quranan ajamiyyan laqalū lawlā fuṣṣilat ayātuhu ‘ajamiyyun waarabī qul huwa liladhīna amanū hudan wa-shifāun wa—alladhīna lā yu’minūna fī ‘ādhānihim waqr un wa-huwa alaihim amá ula’ik yunādawna min makānin baīd
Translation: Had We made it a non-Arabic Quran, they would have said, “Why are its verses not explained in detail? Is it a non-Arabic and an Arabic?” Say, “It is a guide and a healing for those who believe. As for those who do not believe, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness for them. They are called from afar.”
Surah An-Nahl (16:69)
The mention of healing, or “shifaa”, in Surah An-Nahl (16:69), is seen when Allah instructs bees, symbolically directing us towards his wisdom in creating medicinal properties in natural substances. The verse reads:
ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلاً۬ يَخْرُجُ مِن بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ۬ مِّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌ۬ لِّلنَّاسِ إِنَّ فِى ذَٲلِكَ لَآيَةً۬ لِّقَوْمٍ۬ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
Transliteration:
thumma kulī min kulli ath-thamarāti faslukī subula rabbiki thululan yakhruju min butūnihā sharābum mukhtalifun alwānuhu fīhi shifāun lilnāsi, inna fī dhālika la’āyatil liqawmin yatafakkarūn
Translation:
Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]. There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who give thought.
In this verse, Allah directs bees to eat from all sorts of ripe fruits, use their Creator’s provided pathways, and produce a liquid of different colors (honey), which acts as a source of healing for humans. It serves as a reminder for humanity about the healing and medicinal properties endowed in natural substances by Allah. The miracles embedded within the natural world are a testament to the divine wisdom and power of our Creator.
Surah Yunus (10:57)
Surah Yunus (10:57) is a verse within the 10th chapter of the Holy Quran. In this verse, Allah presents the Quran as guidance, healing, and mercy for those who believe. The verse reads:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Transliteration: Yā ‘Ayyuhā An-Nāsu Qad Jā’atkum Maw`iẓatun Min Rabbikum Wa Shifā’un Limā Fī Aṣ-Ṣudūri Wa Hudáan Wa Raḥmatun Lilmu’uminīn
Translation: O people! There has come to you advice from your Lord, and healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
This verse highlights the importance of the Quran as a source of guidance, compassion and healing, emphasizing its powerful role in the hearts of the believers. In describing the Quran as such, Allah is conveying the significance of faith and adherence to the divine teachings for the well-being and spiritual health of individuals.
In internalizing the messages of this verse, may we seek to draw closer to Allah, be continuously mindful of the blessings brought forth by the Holy Quran, and strive to purify our hearts through His divine guidance.
Dua For Pain Relief | Dua for Relief from Worries and Grief:
During times when distress overwhelms you, remember the words of our Prophet (peace be upon him):
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي وَنورَ صَدْرِي وَجَلاءَ حُزْنِي وذَهَابَ هَمِّي
Transliteration: “Allahumma inni ‘abduka, ibnu ‘abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madhin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qada’uka, as’aluka bismi kullihi wa hai laka, sammaita bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw isth’arta bihi fidhil ‘ilmul-ghaibi ‘indaka, an taj’alul-Qur’ana rab’ia qalbi, wa nooral sadri, wa jala’a huzni wa dhahabu hammi.”
Translation: “O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your Hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart, the light of my chest and a means to dispel my sadness and relieve my distress.”
