As humble servants devoted to the pursuit of divine knowledge, we find ourselves often turning to supplications or “Duas” as a source of comfort and a means to approach our benevolent Creator. It’s our constant endeavour to unweave the wisdom embedded in these divine invocations to strengthen our understanding and foster an intimate bond with Allah s.w.t.
Today, we journey together to explore a profoundly moving dua, as narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). He is quoted to have said, “I heard the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) say, upon completing his prayers one night,”
This supplication succinctly encapsulates the essence of a believer’s soulful yearning. It vividly represents a pouring of one’s heart before Allah, acknowledging His boundless mercy, and invoking it to illuminate one’s life and hereafter.
As we delve into the profundity of this dua, we aspire to comprehend its rich tapestry of meanings, connecting our hearts to Allah’s infinite mercy and guidance.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، هُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ لَيْلَةً حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلاَتِهِ ” اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ تَهْدِي بِهَا قَلْبِي وَتَجْمَعُ بِهَا أَمْرِي وَتَلُمُّ بِهَا شَعَثِي وَتُصْلِحُ بِهَا غَائِبِي وَتَرْفَعُ بِهَا شَاهِدِي وَتُزَكِّي بِهَا عَمَلِي وَتُلْهِمُنِي بِهَا رَشَدِي وَتَرُدُّ بِهَا أُلْفَتِي وَتَعْصِمُنِي بِهَا مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءٍ اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِنِي إِيمَانًا وَيَقِينًا لَيْسَ بَعْدَهُ كُفْرٌ وَرَحْمَةً أَنَالُ بِهَا شَرَفَ كَرَامَتِكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْفَوْزَ فِي الْعَطَاءِ وَيُرْوَى فِي الْقَضَاءِ وَنُزُلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَعَيْشَ السُّعَدَاءِ وَالنَّصْرَ عَلَى الأَعْدَاءِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُنْزِلُ بِكَ حَاجَتِي وَإِنْ قَصَّرَ رَأْيِي وَضَعُفَ عَمَلِي افْتَقَرْتُ إِلَى رَحْمَتِكَ فَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا قَاضِيَ الأُمُورِ وَيَا شَافِيَ الصُّدُورِ كَمَا تُجِيرُ بَيْنَ الْبُحُورِ أَنْ تُجِيرَنِي مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةِ الثُّبُورِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقُبُورِ اللَّهُمَّ مَا قَصَّرَ عَنْهُ رَأْيِي وَلَمْ تَبْلُغْهُ نِيَّتِي وَلَمْ تَبْلُغْهُ مَسْأَلَتِي مِنْ خَيْرٍ وَعَدْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوْ خَيْرٍ أَنْتَ مُعْطِيهِ أَحَدًا مِنْ عِبَادِكَ فَإِنِّي أَرْغَبُ إِلَيْكَ فِيهِ وَأَسْأَلُكَهُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ اللَّهُمَّ ذَا الْحَبْلِ الشَّدِيدِ وَالأَمْرِ الرَّشِيدِ أَسْأَلُكَ الأَمْنَ يَوْمَ الْوَعِيدِ وَالْجَنَّةَ يَوْمَ الْخُلُودِ مَعَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ الشُّهُودِ الرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ الْمُوفِينَ بِالْعُهُودِ إِنَّكَ رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ وَأَنْتَ تَفْعَلُ مَا تُرِيدُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا هَادِينَ مُهْتَدِينَ غَيْرَ ضَالِّينَ وَلاَ مُضِلِّينَ سِلْمًا لأَوْلِيَائِكَ وَعَدُوًّا لأَعْدَائِكَ نُحِبُّ بِحُبِّكَ مَنْ أَحَبَّكَ وَنُعَادِي بِعَدَاوَتِكَ مَنْ خَالَفَكَ اللَّهُمَّ هَذَا الدُّعَاءُ وَعَلَيْكَ الاِسْتِجَابَةُ وَهَذَا الْجَهْدُ وَعَلَيْكَ التُّكْلاَنُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا فِي قَبْرِي وَنُورًا فِي قَلْبِي وَنُورًا مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَىَّ وَنُورًا مِنْ خَلْفِي وَنُورًا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَنُورًا عَنْ شِمَالِي وَنُورًا مِنْ فَوْقِي وَنُورًا مِنْ تَحْتِي وَنُورًا فِي سَمْعِي وَنُورًا فِي بَصَرِي وَنُورًا فِي شَعْرِي وَنُورًا فِي بَشَرِي وَنُورًا فِي لَحْمِي وَنُورًا فِي دَمِي وَنُورًا فِي عِظَامِي اللَّهُمَّ أَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا وَأَعْطِنِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي تَعَطَّفَ الْعِزَّ وَقَالَ بِهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي لَبِسَ الْمَجْدَ وَتَكَرَّمَ بِهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي لاَ يَنْبَغِي التَّسْبِيحُ إِلاَّ لَهُ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْفَضْلِ وَالنِّعَمِ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْمَجْدِ وَالْكَرَمِ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ . وَقَدْ رَوَى شُعْبَةُ وَسُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَعْضَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ بِطُولِهِ .
With Translation and transliteration
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ تَهْدِي بِهَا قَلْبِي وَتَجْمَعُ بِهَا أَمْرِي وَتَلُمُّ بِهَا شَعَثِي وَتُصْلِحُ بِهَا غَائِبِي وَتَرْفَعُ بِهَا شَاهِدِي وَتُزَكِّي بِهَا عَمَلِي وَتُلْهِمُنِي بِهَا رَشَدِي وَتَرُدُّ بِهَا أُلْفَتِي وَتَعْصِمُنِي بِهَا مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءٍ
Allahumma inni as’aluka rahmatan min ‘indika tahdi biha qalbi wa tajma’u biha amri wa talummu biha sha’athi wa tuslihu biha gha’ibi wa tarfa’u biha shahidi wa tuzakki biha ‘amali wa tulhimuni biha rashadi wa taruddu biha ulfati wa ta’simuni biha min kulli su’in
O Allah, I beseeech You for mercy from Your side that guides my heart, unifies my command, mends my fragmentation, rectifies my absent one, raises my evidence, purifies my action, inspires me with my righteousness, repels my pitfalls with it, and shields me against all evil.
اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِنِي إِيمَانًا وَيَقِينًا لَا يَسْ بَعْدَهُ كُفْرٌ وَرَحْمَةً أَنَالُ بِهَا شَرَفَ كَرَامَتِكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ
Allahumma a’atinee eemanan wa yaqeenan la yas ba’dahu kufrun wa rahmatan analu biha sharafa karaamatika fee ad-dunya wa al-akhirah
O Allah, grant me faith and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and obtain through Your mercy the dignity of your generosity in this world and the Hereafter.
للَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْفَوْزَ فِي الْعَطَاءِ وَيُرْوَى فِي الْقَضَاءِ وَنُزُلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَعَيْشَ السُّعَدَاءِ وَالنَّصْرَ عَلَى الأَعْدَاءِ
Allahumma inni as’aluka al-fawza fi al-‘ataa’i wa yurwa fi al-qadaa’i wa nuzul al-shuhadaa’i wa ‘aysh al-su’adaa’i wa al-nasra ‘ala al-‘adaa’i
O Allah, I ask You for victory in the gift and satisfaction in the decree, the company of the martyrs, the life of the fortunate, and victory over the enemies.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُنْزِلُ بِكَ حَاجَتِي وَإِنْ قَصَّرَ رَأْيِي وَضَعُفَ عَمَلِي افْتَقَرْتُ إِلَى رَحْمَتِكَ فَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا قَاضِيَ الأُمُورِ وَيَا شَافِيَ الصُّدُورِ كَمَا تُجِيرُ بَيْنَ الْبُحُورِ أَنْ تُجِيرَنِي مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ مِنْ دَعْوَةِ الثُّبُورِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقُبُورِ
Allahumma inni unzilu bika hajati wa in qasara ra’yi wa da’ufa ‘amali iftaqartu ila rahmatika fa as’aluka ya qadiya al-umoori wa ya shafiya as-sudoori kama tujeru bayna al-buhoori an tujirani min ‘azhabi as-sa’eer min da’wati ath-thuboori wa min fitnati al-quboori
O Allah, I present my needs to You. If my understanding falls short and my deeds are weak, I am in great need of Your mercy. I ask You, the Judge of all affairs and the Healer of hearts, as You rescue amongst vast oceans, to save me from the torment of the blazing flame, from the invocation of despair and from the trial of the grave.
اللَّهُمَّ مَا قَصَّرَ عَنْهُ رَأْيِي وَلَمْ تَبْلُغْهُ نِيَّتِي وَلَمْ تَبْلُغْهُ مَسْأَلَتِي مِنْ خَيْرٍ وَعَدْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوْ خَيْرٍ أَنْتَ مُعْطِيهِ أَحَدًا مِنْ عِبَادِكَ فَإِنِّي أَرْغَبُ إِلَيْكَ فِيهِ
Allahumma ma qassara ‘anhu ra’yi wa lam tablughu niyyati wa lam tablughu mas’alati min khairin wa’adtahu ahadan min khalqika aw khairin anta mu’atihi ahadan min ‘ibadika fa inni arghabu ilayka fihi
O Allah, whatever good I have missed out on due to my limited understanding, my intention not reaching it, or my request not including it that You have promised to anyone of Your creation or any good You willingly grant to anyone amongst Your servants, I desire that from You.
وَأَسْأَلُكَهُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ اللَّهُمَّ ذَا الْحَبْلِ الشَّدِيدِ وَالأَمْرِ الرَّشِيدِ أَسْأَلُكَ الأَمْنَ يَوْمَ الْوَعِيدِ وَالْجَنَّةَ يَوْمَ الْخُلُودِ مَعَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ الشُّهُودِ الرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ الْمُوفِينَ بِالْعُهُودِ إِنَّكَ رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ وَأَنْتَ تَفْعَلُ مَا تُرِيدُ
Wa as’alukahu bi rahmatika rabba al-‘alameen, Allahumma tha al-habli ash-shadeed wa al-amri ar-rasheed, as’aluka al-amna yawma al-wa’eed wa al-jannata yawma al-khulood ma’a al-muqarrabeen ash-shuhud, ar-rukka’i as-sujood, al-muofeena bil’uhud, innaka raheemun wadoodun wa anta taf’alu ma tureedu.
I ask You, Allah, by Your mercy, O Lord of the worlds, O Allah, Possessor of the strong rope and the wise command, I ask You for safety on the Day of Warning and Paradise on the Day of Eternity, with the near ones who witness, those who bow and prostrate in prayer, who fulfill their covenants. Indeed, You are the Most Merciful and the Loving, and You do what You desire.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا هَادِينَ مُهْتَدِينَ غَيْرَ ضَالِّينَ وَلاَ مُضِلِّينَ سِلْمًا لأَوْلِيَائِكَ وَعَدُوًّا لأَعْدَائِكَ نُحِبُّ بِحُبِّكَ مَنْ أَحَبَّكَ وَنُعَادِي بِعَدَاوَتِكَ مَنْ خَالَفَكَ
Allahumma ij’alna hadiina muhtadeena ghaira dalla wa la mudilleena silman li awliyaa’i wa ‘adooan li ‘adaa’i, nuhibbu bi hubbika man ahabbaka wa nu’aadee bi ‘adaawatika man khaalafak.
O Allah, make us guided and guiding others, not astray nor misleading, at peace with Your allies and an enemy to Your enemies. We love with Your love those who love You and oppose with Your enmity those who oppose You.
اللَّهُمَّ هَذَا الدُّعَاءُ وَعَلَيْكَ الاِسْتِجَابَةُ. وَهَذَا الْجَهْدُ وَعَلَيْكَ التُّكْلاَنُ
Allahumma hatha ad-du’aa’ wa ‘alayka al-istijaba, wa hatha al-jahd wa ‘alayka at-tuklaan,
O Allah, this is the supplication and the response is upon You. And this is the effort, and upon You is dependence.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا فِي قَبْرِي وَنُورًا فِي قَلْبِي وَنُورًا مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَىَّ وَنُورًا مِنْ خَلْفِي وَنُورًا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَنُورًا عَنْ شِمَالِي وَنُورًا مِنْ فَوْقِي وَنُورًا مِنْ تَحْتِي وَنُورًا فِي سَمْعِي وَنُورًا فِي بَصَرِي وَنُورًا فِي شَعْرِي وَنُورًا فِي بَشَرِي وَنُورًا فِي لَحْمِي وَنُورًا فِي دَمِي وَنُورًا فِي عِظَامِي
Allahumma ija’al lee nooran fi qabri wa nooran fi qalbi wa nooran min bayni yadayya wa nooran min khalfi wa nooran ‘an yameeni wa nooran ‘an shimali wa nooran min fawqi wa nooran min tahti wa nooran fi sam’i wa nooran fi basari wa nooran fi sha’ri wa nooran fi bashari wa nooran fi lahmi wa nooran fi dami wa nooran fi ‘idhaami
O Allah, make for me a light in my grave, a light in my heart, a light before me, a light behind me, a light on my right, a light on my left, a light above me, a light beneath me, a light in my hearing, a light in my seeing, a light in my hair, a light in my skin, a light in my flesh, a light in my blood, a light in my bones.
اللَّهُمَّ أَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا وَأَعْطِنِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ لِي نُورًا سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي تَعَطَّفَ الْعِزَّ وَقَالَ بِهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي لَبِسَ الْمَجْدَ وَتَكَرَّمَ بِهِ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي لاَ يَنْبَغِي التَّسْبِيحُ إِلاَّ لَهُ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْفَضْلِ وَالنِّعَمِ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْمَجْدِ وَالْكَرَمِ سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ ”
Allahumma ‘aẓim li nooran wa ‘a’ṭini nooran wa j’al li nooran. Subḥan alladhī ta’aṭṭafa l-izz wqāl bih, subḥan alladhī labisa lmajd wa takarrama bih, subḥan alladhī lā yanbaghī l-tasbīḥ illā lah, subḥan dhī l-faḍli wa n-niam, subḥan dhī l-majdi wa l-karim, subḥan dhī l-jalāl wa l-ikrām
O Allah, magnify for me the light, grant me light, and make for me light. Glory be to the One who embraced the honor and was exalted by it, the One who adorned Himself with majesty and became noble through it. Glorified is He for whom alone praise is befitting, the One who bestows abundant favor and blessings upon His creation. Glory be to the Possessor of majesty and generosity, and to the Possessor of sublime dignity and honor.
