Dua For Eating

by MD

Dua for Eating | As Muslims, we understand that each moment of our lives is an opportunity to connect with Allah (s.w.t). Eating, a fundamental act of daily life, is no exception. The act of nourishing ourselves becomes a spiritual practice when coupled with duas, reminding us of Allah’s boundless kindness and generosity in providing for us.

In the Holy Quran, Surah An-Nahl, Allah s.w.t tells us: “And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat.” (16:66). Each morsel of food we consume is derived from His creation, an embodiment of Allah’s divine generosity.

Before partaking in a meal, it is Sunnah (practices and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)) to recite a dua, acknowledging the source of this sustenance:

Dua for Eating 1

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

“Bismillah”

Translation: “In the name of Allah”

Acknowledging the source of our food deepens our gratitude towards Allah s.w.t and embeds within us humility – recognizing that it is through His mercy alone that we enjoy such blessings.

Another dua to recite before eating, as mentioned in a Hadith:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

“Transliteration”: Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina azaban naar[1%5E].

“Translation”: O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا الطَّعَامَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّة

“Transliteration”: Alhamdu lillahil lazee at’amani hazat ta’am wa razaqanihi min ghairi haulim minni wala quwwah[3%5E].

“Translation”: All praise is due to Allah Who fed me this (food) and provided it for me without any effort or power on my par

Upon completing our meal, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to express our heartfelt gratitude through the following dua:

Dua for Eating 4

“Alhamdulillahillazhee At’amana wasaqana waja’alana Muslimeen”

Translation: “All praise to Allah, who fed us and quenched our thirst and made us Muslims.”
